I really look down on people who instance-block legit nodes because they use a lot of database space, but maybe this is an ignorant opinion.
if an instance is generating a ton of text posts, or a ton of multimedia posts, perhaps it's extremely difficult to expire locally cached content with Mastodon and/or Pleroma?
because otherwise, it looks like people using instance blocks to wallpaper over their inability to manage their own instance.
@deutrino There is a whole lot of federation degrees, there is no federation, or not federation, there is also good federation, bad federation, some one should code a federation compliance and you would see an A+, A, B... even F... That is unknown to the user so far.
@santiago I still want to build an instance chooser which offers up-front disclosure of moderation philosophy, either crowdsourced or posted by admins themselves
personally I'd be quite upset to join an instance and later realize someone I want to follow or talk to is blocked for reasons I disagree with. not everybody cares so much.
I've followed debates on moderation philosophy that went so far as to spawn new communities, going back many years to BBS days, I seem to think about it a lot!
@santiago I also think that an instance chooser with moderation information would be good for everybody, because people who want a block-heavy instance should be able to easily & reliably find one, just as "give me the unaltered firehose plz" types should be able to find their home easily.
@deutrino totally agree
